Wally Cleaver: Sculptor. Who Knew?

Tony Dow, forever known as Wally Cleaver, is now an abstract artist | Arts | Detroit Free Press | freep.com.

Recently I ran across an episode of a soap opera called “Never Too Young” on YouTube that starred Tony Dow. It was, I believe, his first regular cast role after “Leave It To Beaver.” It was about a bunch of surfers who hung out at a surf shop or some such. Pretty terrible, but the soundtrack was kinda zippy!

Singles

Paul Westerberg’s video for “Dyslexic Heart,” from Cameron Crowe’s movie “Singles,” which was released 20 years ago this week. This is one of the seminal movies of my generation. I was 28 and living in a house in the city with four or five other people and we were idealistic and out to change the world. It was a marvelous time. Campbell Scott, Bridget Fonda, Kyra Sedgwick, Matt Dillon and Pearl Jam(!) are all in top form. Watching this movie is a real “auld lang syne” moment for me.

For the record — it holds up. I enjoy it just as much today as I did 20 years ago. (The only thing that’s changed is that Campbell Scott and I have more grey hair now!)

NYPL to Open Charles Dickens Exhibit

New York Public Library to Open Charles Dickens Exhibit – GalleyCat.

I love Dickens. I’m not a Dickens freak, but I’ve been involved with Dickens adaptations in the theatre for more years than I can count.

Truth in advertising …. the first one is my company. The second one is written by a great friend — and was directed two years running by my business partner.

I’ve marketed both.

About Us — The Good Men Project

About Us — The Good Men Project.

Guys today are neither the mindless, sex-obsessed buffoons nor the stoic automatons our culture so often makes them out to be. Our community is smart, compassionate, curious, and open-minded; they strive to be good fathers and husbands, citizens and friends, to lead by example at home and in the workplace, and to understand their role in a changing world. The Good Men Project is a place where that happens. We’re glad to have you along for the ride.

I stumbled upon this by accident. Worth sharing.

Rod Roddenberry: Redefining a Scout’s Honor

Rod Roddenberry: Redefining a Scout’s Honor.

Personally, I can’t wait for discrimination to become a non-issue. We’ve got so many important planetary issues to think about — over-fishing, our decaying environment, hunger, disease. Our intellectual evolution is vital to our ability to concentrate on these things.

Very nice piece from Roddenberry. Worth a read. Glad to see he has inherited some of his father’s sensibilities.

This is from the Huffington Post, BTW.

To paraphrase Dan Savage, here in the land of the free and the home of the brave, we’re always at the end of the line with the freedom and the bravery.

We’ve Always Been Deadbeats

Borrowed Dreams – The Chronicle Review – The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Great piece by Scott Reynolds Nelson in The Chronicle Review. He’s dead right. We’ve always been a debt-based culture.

Hmmm…..

I’m not completely down with his thesis. Some of it strikes me as excellent. Some of it may be a stretch. I’ll have to re-read it.

Still, the title is disingenuous. How to be gay? You are sexually attracted to someone of the same sex. Period. There’s not a grey area here.

Shakespeare’s play on a day of reckoning – The Irish Times – Sat, Aug 18, 2012

Shakespeare’s play on a day of reckoning – The Irish Times – Sat, Aug 18, 2012.

Great read.

I love Shakespeare. There’s so much there that we are still discovering. The book Fintan O’Toole alludes to, Nicholl’s The Reckoning is a fascinating account of Kit Marlowe’s death.

Shakespeare was a bit of a subversive. As all great artists are!

You go girl!

I’ve been deeply involved in this crazy Stratfordian/Oxfordian debate at one time in my life. It’s all stuff and nonsense.

Who wrote Shakespeare? Shakespeare.

End of.

Here’s The Telegraph coverage of Dame Janet.
