San Francisco Bans Public Nudity

San Francisco supervisors voted Tuesday afternoon to officially ban public nudity, marking the end of an era for a “city where anything goes.”

Supervisor Scott Wiener’s ordinance was approved in a 6-5 vote, with the moderates on the board generally supporting it and the progressives voting in opposition.

I love the argument that requiring a minimal amount of clothing in public is a violation of freedom of speech. Some people may accuse me of being an ass or showing my ass, but actually showing my ass on the street — nothing to do with talking.

Also, the name of the sponsor of this legislation is Weiner. *chuckle* Hi, I’m 15.

PS – Why are there no beautiful nudists? If I wanted to see naked pudgy old people, I’d just look in the damn mirror!

31 arguments against gay marriage (and why they’re all wrong) | New Humanist

I do not believe all opponents of gay marriage are hateful. Some have just not been exposed to the right arguments, and so I will demonstrate here that each anti-gay marriage argument ultimately serves to oppress or imply the lesser status of the minority of which I am a part. In rallying against the introduction of equal marriage, religious campaigners have frequently stressed that their objections are not driven by homophobia, and have deployed numerous arguments to demonstrate this. To the untrained ear these arguments sound like they may have grounding in reason, but on closer inspection reveal themselves as homophobic.

A nice piece from Jason Wakefield, writing on the New Humanist.  This is a U.K. site and, as such, much of the data is Euro- or Anglo-centric. Doesn’t matter, really. You can find the U.S. equivalents if you’d like; they’re buried down about a quarter of an inch in any Google search.

Political Forecaster Nate Silver Talks About Being Gay

Political Forecaster Nate Silver Talks About Being Gay.

I’ve been blogging a lot about the poll quants — Nate Silver being the King of the Quants — over on my marketing blog recently.

NO IDEA HE WAS GAY.

How did I miss this? I mean, I’m a freakin’ rabid fan, too! HA! That’s what you get for getting too wrapped up in the numbers, I guess!

Good on ya, Nate.

Evangelist Franklin Graham Claims Complete Economic Collapse May Be Needed To Fix America

“In the last four years, we have begun to turn our backs on God,” Graham told Walter. “We have taken God out of our education system. We have taken him out of government. You have lawyers that sue you every time you mention the name of Jesus Christ in any public forum. What has happened is we have allowed ourselves to take God out everything that we do – and I believe that God will judge our nation one day.”

Here’s what I have to say to Franklin Graham: kiss my gay ass.

I swear, these evangelical wingnuts have no idea about our history. Taking God out of education? Out of government? Really? Franklin obviously grew up in a completely different country than I did.

He and his father have this extraordinarily scary ability to appear normal. But they’re not. They’re the worst thing about America.

‘Partners’ Canceled: CBS Pulls The Plug

‘Partners’ Canceled: CBS Pulls The Plug On Freshman Comedy.

Kinda sorry about this. Kinda.

I gave it a big slap when it debuted, but I have to say, it’s grown on me a little. However, it’s still not what I would call a great show. It was fine. There are plenty that are worse. The cast was great, it’s the writing that sunk this one.

Ask anyone, TV is a writer’s medium and if the situations are not written well, well…. ya got trouble, my friend.

I was hoping this show would find its footing because we need more mainstream portrayals of gays and lesbians on television, so that’s why I’m “kinda sorry” about this show’s demise.

Partners was too old-fashioned. It was a style of comedy that just felt old-school. If you want new comedy, try these on for size: Modern Family, New Girl, Happy Endings, and the best of them all, The New Normal.

(For what it’s worth, the godfather of “new comedy” was the sublime Arrested Development. If you haven’t seen it, find it. And remember, there’s always money in the banana stand.)

Bridget Jones to Return in New Helen Fielding Novel – GalleyCat

Bridget Jones to Return in New Helen Fielding Novel – GalleyCat.

I’m not a 30-something woman, but I’m kinda geeked by this. I loved the first two Bridget Jones books. The films weren’t bad either, but the books were terrific. I bought the second one in an airport bookstall at Heathrow on a U.S. bound flight the day it came out in the U.K. and read it all the way across the pond!

Hey, at least it wasn’t Twilight!

Henry VIII The Musical

Henry VIII The Musical.

Oh, this is just as gas! I love it when young people take the bull by the horns and mount great things like this. Reminds me of some stunning work done with teens when I was the with the (late and lamented) Baltimore Shakespeare Festival.

H/T to Stephen Fry’s Twitter. Go figure!

Straight Up Thanks.

Again, something terrific started by Dan Savage. This is a blog thanking mostly straight people for helping to ensure marriage equality in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington in Election 2012. It’s a terrific scroll-through.

Thanks to you Dan & Terry for all you continue to do!

David Simon | Barack Obama And The Death Of Normal

But the country is changing. And this may be the last election in which anyone but a fool tries to play — on a national level, at least — the cards of racial exclusion, of immigrant fear, of the patronization of women and hegemony over their bodies, of self-righteous discrimination against homosexuals. Some in the Republican party and among the teabagged fringe will continue to play such losing hands for some time to come; this shit worked well in its day and distracted many from addressing any of our essential national issues. But again, if they play that weak-ass game past this point, they are fools.

David Simon is bang on. This is a lovely post. Also, he’s an amazing storyteller. You’ve probably enjoyed a lot of his writing for television and never even known it.
